Report on TFWP Primary Agriculture Call for Information

Part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program’s ongoing review of Primary Agriculture, was a Call for Information  that CAHRC distributed in October. Both Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada Departments are supporting the Call for Information, seeking research and information from stakeholders using the primary agriculture streams (Seasonal Agriculture Worker Program and Agricultural Stream).  The joint call deadline was December 1, 2017, and it offered agricultural employers and associations an important opportunity to provide research and input into the ongoing TFWP Primary Agriculture review.  CAHRC was copied on 25 substantive industry research submissions from agricultural associations, producers and processors.  The Agriculture Submissions to Support a Review of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program’s Primary Agriculture Streams that CAHRC received are available for your review. House of Commons Finance Committee Adopts Key Labour Task Force Recommendation

Agricultural Labour Issues Prioritized in the Pre-Budget Report The House of Commons Finance Committee pre-budget report entitled, Driving Inclusive Growth: Spurring Productivity and Competitiveness in Canada, was released December 2017 and it supports key Agriculture and Agri-Food Labour Task Force and industry agriculture labour recommendations. Portia MacDonald-Dewhirst, Executive Director of CAHRC and Mark Wales, Labour Task Force Agriculture Co-Chair presented at the Finance Committee in September.  CAHRC and LTF testimony.  One of the key LTF recommendations adopted by the Finance Committee report includes: “Recommendation 55, Establish an interdepartmental advisory council for the agricultural and agri-food sector. The council, which could be comprised of Employment and Social Development Canada, Service Canada, Citizenship and Immigration Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, should support improved labour availability for the sector” (Page 88).  The report also supported several other LTF and agricultural association solutions that would significantly improve agricultural labour issues including: More
